Hypnotherapy for anxiety and panic attacks is an extremely powerful tool. We use hypnotherapy with anxiety to change the thought processes that lead to anxiety and panic. During the hypnotherapy processes the client reduces the anxiety levels previously experienced in a given situation. This is done by changing the underlying belief systems that support the anxiety. We access these beliefs by using hypnosis and hypnotherapy is the process we use to collapse the anxiety . Once the underlying beliefs have been collapsed the anxiety symptoms will be changed permanently.

Panic Disorder is a serious condition that around 1 out of every 5 people might experience. It usually appears during the teens or early adulthood, and while the exact causes are unclear, there does seem to be a connection with major life transitions that are potentially stressful: graduating from college, getting married, having a first child, and so on. Normally it seams to start with a particular event that scares the sub-conscious. The sub-conscious has one primary task in life and that is to keep you safe. If something should scare you (or even embarrass you severely) the sub-conscious will seek to avoid the same type (or similar) situations. This is what we call avoidance techniques. There is also some evidence for a genetic predisposition; if a family member has suffered from panic disorder, you have an increased risk of suffering from it yourself, especially during a time in your life that is particularly stressful.

Panic Attacks: The Hallmark of Panic Disorder

A lot of anxiety that we see in a hypnotherapy clinic is accompanied by panic disorder this is marked by recurrent, spontaneous panic attacks. A panic attack is an intense period of fear or discomfort. During the attack, a person may experience the following symptoms:

To be diagnosed as a panic attack, four or more symptoms should be present. Otherwise, the attack is described as "limited symptom attack." Those who experience panic attacks usually describe them as occurring "out of the blue."

You probably recognize this as the classic 'fight or flight' response that human beings experience when we are in a situation of danger. But during a panic attack, these symptoms seem to arise from out of nowhere. They occur in seemingly harmless situations--they can even happen while you are asleep.

What can I do: Controlling the Panic

Anxiety and panic are simply processes that we have learned. As with all learning it is impossible to unlearn (at least without help). For instance can you unlearn how to ride a bike. It is the same for your anxiety and panic once you have learned these processes it is very difficult to unlearn them on your own. This is where hypnotherapy comes in it is able to access these sub-conscious processes and help you to unlearn them.

racing heartbeat

difficulty breathing, feeling as though you 'can't get enough air'

terror that is almost paralysing

dizziness, light-headedness or nausea

trembling, sweating, shaking

choking, chest pains

hot flushes, or sudden chills

tingling in fingers or toes ('pins and needles')

fear that you're going to go crazy or are about to die

blushing Blushing is an unconscious, physical reaction that our bodies have to certain situations. Blushing is triggered by something external and is no different from any other learned response, such as screaming when we see a spider. In some ways, blushing is like a 'fight or flight' response where our bodies react to perceived threats. Often, problems with blushing can be traced back to an initial sensitising event, for example, you may have been asked to read in front of the class by a school teacher and perhaps you didn’t do it very well and blushed, and maybe your fellow pupils laughed or ridiculed you. In this case, the blushing achieved a positive result, but if it persists over time in similar situations, it becomes a nuisance.

Hypnotherapy can help to stop blushing in a number of different ways. Above, we talked about how blushing is an unconscious reaction to certain stimuli. Hypnotherapy can work with your sub-conscious mind to program in new, positive sub-conscious reactions to these external triggers to make blushing a thing of the past.

Hypnotherapy can also help to control blushing by helping you to feel more comfortable in situations where in the past you were prone to becoming flushed. A good Hypnotherapist can work with you to build your confidence and assertiveness so that you are less likely to feel vulnerable and respond by blushing.
